DISABLED VS DIFFERENTLY ABLED

Sometimes I wonder if the disabled community is a bit too sensitive.

I’ve seen a lot of comments online lately and over the years about the phrase disabled being an insult because we are ABLE to do things - just differently. I get it. I understand that differently able is a much more friendly, positive and active term. However, should we be getting insulted by our title?

There are many terms that people use to references disabilities that can be insulting or patronising:

Spaz
Cripple

Superhero

Mong

Retard
Special

Why make the thing that defines us an insult too? Own it. Yes I’m disabled. I have a disability. It doesn’t mean I’m UNable. It just means I am disabled, there are many things I can’t do but that is ok.

I'm owning my disability and I am proud to be a member of the disabled community.
